Pure CSS Live Coding at le Wonder commissionned by Raphael Bastide
Context
Raphael Bastide invited Doriane Timmermans to propose a CSS live coding experience. The performance was accompanied of Lucky Juj slow transformative sounds.
Live coding with CSS is a very diagonal take on Algorave/Live Coding practice, as instinctively it would be depicted as weak in term of computation, and too simplistic in term of visual creation. However, it has some interesting features:
- the transition property can animate between two state automatically
- the elements can be nested creating quickly chaotic systems
- a declarative syntax, without any draw loop, changing a declarations change something, wherever the declaration is in the file
Bringing web materialities to the live coding scene. Playing with CSS as a purely graphical system outside of it's expected aesthetic. While at the same time keeping hint of its web materiality by invoquing UI-like elements and classic web feel in the transitions. The web can be a place for formal performance, the fact that it is part of our daily lives make it an interesting cultural object to explore: those shapes could manifest on most screen we look at, in a browser, in your phone, and without framework or complex tool/code.
