In our daily lives, HTML & CSS are no longer technical artifacts that concern designers alone. Everyone who interacts with technology goes through a layer of CSS: on websites, on social networks, on apps. But CSS isn't limited to the browser, it's also found in email, software and operating systems. CSS is no longer limited to the screen, as it is increasingly used to produce printed documents, notably as an alternative and DIY publishing practice. Understanding the specificities, materialities and poetics of web media means understanding our everyday technological environment.
These are both languages and standards that dialogue with the web technology apparatus to declare, manifest, a web document.
HTML and CSS are all about writing, unlike other design paradigms we're used to - typically the Adobe suite.
When telling object through CSS one can ask themselves the following questions
- do I translate this as adding an HTML element, or a line of CSS, or a combination of both?
- which element ends up inside which?
- does movement become scroll, or cursor?
- does touch become click, or cursor?
- does brilliance become color play or animated gradients?
- does warmth become luminosity?
- what is the heaviness of a website?
- what is its speed?
- what is its texture?
